Anyone Know Why Some Kids Are Afraid Of Costumed Characters and Others Aren’t?

My daughter just turned 3 and we thought it was a good time to take her to Walt Disney World.

I really don’t know why some kids love costumed characters and others are hysterical over them. I am mom to 4 who have all disliked costumed characters. My youngest was (and still is) the worst. She began her fear of anyone in a Costume before she could even walk. Her fear was so extensive that it even involved kids her own age. We attended a play group at our church and every time the teacher brought out the dress-up clothes box, my daughter would bury her head in my leg or lap and wouldn’t come out until play group was over. She would literally shake with fear and grip me so tight I’d have black and blue marks. These were toddlers her own age putting on princess and fireman Costumes without even any masks yet it still put her in a paralyzing panic. She’s 12 now and still has a fear, but it is less pronounced. We’ve never gone to a circus (due to the clowns) and any talk of Disney World is out of the question. Our daughter didn’t even go trick or treating on Halloween until she was 9 years old and even than only 20 minutes was all she could do. I was quite concerned and asked her doctor about this since it was such an intense reaction. She said there really isn’t any defining reason why some kids are fearful of costumes and others aren’t. Just last week I was working with a group of 12 3-5 year olds. A fireman was coming to talk about fire safety. One little boy entered the room, took one look at the fireman (who had brought all his gear with him) and began to violently shake, cry, and repeat how he “needed” to get out of here. I suspected he’d probably had this same talk at his preschool and knew that the fireman was going to put on all that gear (which he did) so I had one of the helpers take this little boy to another room where he was just fine. The other 11 kids were enthralled with the fireman’s equipement, but for this one boy it was reason for panic.
